I am outside the city walls for the first time! O charioteer, take me to the village!
I desire food.
I desire warmth.
I desire comfort.
At the age of 29, Siddhartha was tired of his life inside the palace, and asked the charioteer to take him beyond the city walls. His father ordered for all unhappy sights to be covered up. But he saw 3 things that made him unhappy - a weak, sick and dead man. However, he then saw a holy man, seeking the truth, and aspired to do the same..
That very night, Siddhartha escaped from the palace. He exchanged his clothes for those of beggars, and searched for the Hindu holy men. They told him that in order to find the truth, he must deny his body's desires. Siddhartha starved himself for 6 years, eating only 3 sesame seeds a day! He gave up food.
He sat under a bodhi tree, and resolved not to move until he found the truth. He realised that starving himself was doing him no good, and left the Hindu men. His life at the palace flashed past but he stayed put. He then realised that he needn't fear death - it had no power over him if he did so. He became enlightened in this process, at the age of 35! Siddhartha became The Buddha. He then devoted his life to teaching others what he had learnt.
