- One day, Clay Jensen went outside of his house and found a shoebox-sized package propped against the front of his door.
- Once Clay was in his room, he started to listen to the tapes on the cassette. As he listens, he starts to get shocked and startled...
- He opens the box, and finds a bunch of cassette tapes. He couldn't be more confused.
- "Hello, boys and girls. Hannah Baker here. Live and in stereo. " No return engagements. No encore. And this time, absolutely no requests." "I hope you're ready, because I 'm going to tell you the story of my life. More specifically why my life ended.
- Hannah also encourages you to go to the places on the tapes.
- Once Clay finally gets his head wrapped around the fact that his long-time crush Hannah Baker made tapes on why she killed herself, he starts to listen to them. "The rules are pretty simple. There are only two. Rule number one: You listen. Number two: You pass it on. " There are 13 people on each 13 tapes, and if you are listening to a tape, you are one of the reasons why.
- CASSETTE 1: SIDE A: Justin Foley. A senior, Hannah's first kiss. Hannah and Justin always talked on the phone, and even hung out at school. But what happened that made him so bad that he was on a tape? He spread rumors about her, and broke up with her. As Clay listens to this tape, he wants to confront Justin for what he did.
- But one day, Jessica started to not come to Monet's after school. Hannah started to get lonely, and she didn't have any friends to talk to. This is what started the depression.
- CASSETTE 2: SIDE B: Jessica Davis. Hannah and Jessica, her friend always went to Monet's after school to talk about their day.
- Next on the tapes, we have Alex Standall. He creates a "hot or not" list. as revenge for his breakup with Jessica. This affects Hannah because it says she has the best butt" and that makes Jessica jealous.
- As Hannah is in her house, she hears this weird clicking noise. Tyler Down, taking pictures outside of Hannah's window. This makes Hannah feel very uncomfortable. Why is Tyler doing this you ask? Well, Tyler is stalking Hannah. " What were you trying to catch me in the act of, Tyler? And were you disappointed? Or pleasantly surprised?" Hannah stated on one of her tapes
- Place: Rosie's. Next on the tapes is Marcus Cole. What did he do to get on these tapes? Well, one night Hannah and Marcus went out for a date at Rosie's. Everything was going fine until Marcus shows up an hour late, and has the whole basketball team with him. Sliding next to her in the booth, he tries to feel up Hannah's skirt, and Hannah pushes him off. Marcus is fed up and ditches, stating that he thought "she was easy" This pushes Hannah over the edge, making her even more sad.
- Hey Clay! How's it going?
- Clay is on a tape, but not because he did anything wrong. Clay was an "innocent." Rather than bretraying or taking advantage of her, Clay was a good friend; and was always there for her.
- Going great! What about you?
- "So congratulations, Bryce. You're the one. I let my reputation catch up with me-I let my reputation become me-with you. How does it feel?" Clay hears on the tapes
- Next up, Bryce Walker. See here we have Hannah at one of Bryce's party's having a good time. As Hannah goes into his backyard, she is asked to get into the hot tub. As everyone leaves the hot tub, Bryce gets in. But what Hannah doesn't know is that Bryce is going to rape her.
- Hannah can't take living in this world anymore, but she does give it one last try. The last tape. TAPE 7: SIDE A. This tape is different; Instead of audio recording herself, she is going to record her conversation with Mr. Porter. Hannah goes to Mr Porter, the school's principle to get some help. She tells him that she needed everything to stop. "I need everything to stop. People. Life.
- "You can just move on Hannah...."
- After Clay has listened to all the tapes, he goes to the post office and mails the tapes out. He will see Hannah's empty seat in his class, and wanting her back. If only that could ever happen....
- "You alright honey?"
- And the adults never know...
- Yeah...
- Gone, but never forgotten. Hannah Baker was still in the minds of people that hurt her. Everyone walked the halls like nothing ever happened, but Clay doesn't. He misses her so much, and wants to kill Bryce.
- Time to go to school...
