- During their conversation in the woods, Junior realizes after speaking with Rowdy, “‘Your sister is dead because you left us. You killed her.’ That made me stop laughing. I suddenly felt like I might never laugh again. Rowdy was right” (Alexie 211)

- So many dead... and I'm not far behind
- While recalling valentines day, Junior says, "A few days after I gave Penelope a homemade Valentine (and she said she forgot it was Valentines day), my dad's best friend was shot in the parking lot of a 7-eleven." (Alexie 169)
- After pulling him from class, Ms. Warren tells Junior, "Arnold, I'm sorry, but I just got a phone call from your mother. Its your sister. She's passed away." (Alexie 201)
- After he graduates, Junior recalls, "Today, my mother, father, and I went to the cemetery and cleaned graves. We took care of Grandmother Spirit, Eugene, and Mary. Mom had packed a picnic and Dad brought his saxophone, so we made a whole day of it." (Alexie 215)
- At some point, Junior says, "'We should climb that monster.' 'That tree?' 'No your big head, of course I'm talking about the tree. The biggest tree on the rez.'" (Alexie 225)
- While playing basketball, Junior realizes, "I don't know what happened. But for once, and for the only time in my life, I jumped higher than Rowdy. I rose above him as he tried to dunk it."
