  • In Haiti, society comprised of four main groups:Grand Blancs Petit BlancsGeune de colourSlaves
  • The grand blancs (or "big whites") were the wealthiest and of the highest ranking out of all four groups in Haitian Society. They owned most plantations and slaves in the French colony.
  • THE GRAND BLANCS
  • Petit Blancs translates to "Small Whites", which quite literally explains their position in the Haitian Society. They were mainly artisans, shopkeepers, merchants and other occupations avoiding any form of "slave work". Often, they owned slaves, but they were not as wealthy as the grand blancs.
  • THE PETIT BLANCS
  • Although they are put in the same category sometimes, there is a difference between the two groups. The grand blancs were much wealthier with more plantations and slaves than the petit blancs. The petit blancs were less independent and mostly found occupations preventing slave work. They were more loyal to France, as opposed to the Grand Blancs, who wanted freedom from the French bureaucracy.
  • DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PETIT AND GRAND BLANCS
  • The "Gens de Couleur" were the freed people of color. They were not enslaved and worked as artisans, shopkeepers or landowners. They earned quite a lot and were knowledgeable on European culture and descent, as they were mixed French/European and Africans. They made up a total of 5% of the Haitian Society.
  • Gens de Couleur
  • SLAVES (NEG. BOSSAL AND NEG. CREOLE)
  • This group made up 87% of the Haitian society population, at approximately 452,000 people, the largest group, but also the poorest. They worked on the plantations under inhumane, terrible conditions for very little food to survive. Their children were raised on the plantation and enslaved from the minute they were able to carry out tasks. Tasks were delegated based on age, capability, gender, etc.
