  • The Black Panther Party was founded by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale in 1966
  • We're gonna start a group to help our community

  • Stokely Carmichael uses the phase black power in a speech and asserts the term as black pride

  • October 1, 1966 he Black Panther Party was founded by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, CA. The start of the party rejected the legitimacy of the U.S. government. They initially saw black communities in the United States as a colony and the police as an occupying army. They promoted armed self-defense in in black communities. Challenging the economic status quo.
  • In May of 1967 the BPP members invaded California's capital protesting the limits on the right to bear arms

  • 14 days later Newton and Seale create the first draft of the Black Panther Party 10 point program. Following, in December 16 year old Bobby Hutton becomes the first male recruit of the Black Panther Party. They go on to open their first office January 1. 1967 located at 5624 Grove st, Oakland, CA. The same day the BPP starts patrolling the streets of Oakland.
  • April 6, 1968 Bobby Hutton, the first male recruit of the BPP is shot and killed
  • In April, member Stokely Carmichael coins the phrase “black power” at a speech given in Seattle. He defines it as an assertion of black pride and the coming together of black people to fight for their liberation by any means necessary. The term's radicalism alarms many who believe the civil rights movement's effectiveness and moral authority crucially depend on nonviolent civil disobedience. Following a few days later, the first issue of the Black Panther Party Black Community News Service is published. This four-page mimeograph newspaper headlines Why Was Denzil Dowell Killed?
  • In May of 1967, armed Black Panther Party members invade the california’s capitol protesting the legislation that limits the right to bear arms. The Black Panther Party take on the communist ideology wanting more power for the people, especially black people in America. Founder Huey P. Newton is arrested and a movement rally begins February 17, 1968. held at the Oakland Auditorium on Newton's birthday. More than 5,000 supporters attend including Stokely Carmichael, H. Rap Brown, James Forman, Ron Dellums, and Peace and Freedom Party representatives.

  • In March of 1968, an FBI memo from J. Edgar Hoover outlines goals to his staff to Prevent the coalition of militant black nationalist groups.” The following month April 6, Bobby Hutton, 17 year old Black Panther Party member- also the first male recruit, is shot and killed. An Oakland police officer is also killed. The shoot-out also results in the murder of Bobby Hutton; Eldridge Cleaver is wounded. Seven other Panthers are arrested. 3 days later, the party helps resigistar people to vote, edging for a communist style government.
