- Kent and Gloucester are discussing King Lear's plan to divide the kingdom. Gloucester then introduces his illegitimate son, Edmund.
- Haha, my plan is working. What an idiot.
- King Lear splits his kingdom into 3 regions for each of his daughters to take before he dies. He asks each daughter to profess how much they love him to form his decision on who should receive what land. Cordelia refuses to praise King Lear's ego and he banishes her and later Kent who tries to defend her.
- Upon finding out that Cordelia has no dowry, Burgundy revokes his marriage proposal. However, France excepts her as is, and take her back home to wed her. As she is leaving, Cordelia condemns her sisters for deceiving their father.
- I should have quit when I had the chance.
- Edmund devises a plan to frame his step brother, Edgar, by forging a letter in his hand stating that he, wants to kill their father for his inheritance. Edmund created this plan so he can be in the direct line of succession.
- Edmund's plan does work out and tells his step brother that he should run away from the trouble that he has caused.
- Goneril complains to her steward, Oswald, about the havoc in her palace that her father and his knights are causing. She orders Oswald to provoke Lear to gain a reason to kick him out of her palace. She decides to write a letter to her sister, Regan, so she can be on the plan as well.
