  • PROLOGUE
  • CONFLICT
  • RISING ACTION
  • A ghost resembling the recently dead King Hamlet is spotted on the ramparts of Elsinore Castle in Denmark, by two watchmen. They bring Prince Hamlet, son of Gertrude and the late king, to speak to the ghost, who declares that he is King Hamlet and that he was murdered by Claudius, his brother who has inherited the throne and married Gertrude. The ghost urges Hamlet to seek revenge and disappears.
  • CLIMAX
  • Prince Hamlet decides to avenge his father, but delays his revenge and appears to enter a state of madness. Gertrude and Claudius worry about his behavior and assign his friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to watch him. The Lord Chamberlain, Polonius, suggests that Hamlet may be in love with his daughter Ophelia, but Claudius spies on Hamlet while he talks to the girl and finds that the prince does not love her.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • When a group of actors arrives in Elsinore, Hamlet decides to test Claudius by having the actors perform how the prince imagines Claudius killed the king. Claudius stands up and leaves the theatre, affirming his guilt to Hamlet. Hamlet goes to kill Claudius but finds him praying, so he spares him, thinking he would go to Heaven if he killed Claudius then. Claudius fears for his safety and orders that Hamlet be sent to England.
  • DENOUEMENT
  • Hamlet accidentally stabs Polonius. Ophelia kills herself after hearing of her father's death, and Polonius' son Laertes returns to Denmark in a rage. Claudius arranges a fencing match between Hamlet and Laertes, but poisons Laertes' sword and a goblet that he will give to Hamlet if he wins. Hamlet hits Laertes first, but Gertrude drinks from the goblet and dies from the poison. Both duelists take hits from the poisoned blade, but Laertes reveals that Claudius was responsible for Gertrude's death.
  • Hamlet stabs Claudius with the poisoned sword and forces him to drink the rest of the poison before dying. The Norwegian prince Fortinbras, who had attacked Denmark previously, enters with ambassadors from England. Finding the entire royal family dead, he takes control of the kingdom.
  • Honoring Hamlet's last request, the scholar Horatio tells the prince's story to Fortinbras. He then requests that Hamlet be carried away with the respect given to a fallen soldier.
