- Hello, I'm here today in a local coffee shop in Hoorn, netherlands. Today is February 13, 2004 and im here with miep gies i was very intrested about her story and how she survived.
- Well i didn't want to have that permanent remorse about failing to help someone in need and i feel that i would regret it for the rest of my life
- Miep gies you are known as a hero so please tell me why did you take on the responsibility of hiding the franks?
- Well, I had to buy food in the "black" market. And my husband Jan also helped by providing me with so-called ration cards.I knew a greengrocer who understood what I was doing and helped as much as they could.
- Ms.Miep please tell me how did you get all these supplies to support the people in hiding?
- I was extremely concerned about him and his family, seeing what was happening to the jews in Amsterdam. Every day you saw trucks with jews heading for the railway station, from where the trains left for the camps.
- What were your feelings about the franks going into hiding?
- It was a laboratory,used for product development.However During the war there was no development of new products so Otto Frank decided to transform this space into a hiding space.
- And please tell me did you know about the "secret room" before the franks hid there?
- I was so much better at home in the Netherlands and that it would be better for me to stay there. So my foster parents agreed to that .so When I turned 18, I started working as a typist in an embroidery and pleating workshop. Unfortunately When the crisis hit six years later, I lost my job.
- Ms.Miep what was your life like before the holocaust?
