  • Elizabeth IThe Queen of England during the Spanish ArmadaProtestant
  • Phillip IIKing Of Spain during the Spanish Armada Catholic
  • Years of religious and political differences lead to a conflict between the two nations.
  • Phillip Thought he should conquer England and convert it to Catholic. To do this he would have to invade by sea using the "invincible" Spanish Fleet,
  • 130 strong Spanish ships were headed to the English channel in anticipation of a victory in battle.
  • These ships were heavily armed with cannons. On board the 130 ships were 8,000 sailors and 20,000 soldiers all well trained and skilled.
  • The Spanish fleet was met by the English Fleet in the English Channel. The English fleet was much smaller but were more familiar with the local water and weather. Also the English ships were smaller, faster and more maneuverable which was helpful in the narrow English channel.
  • One of the first major causes of the armada's loss was the 8 English fireships that were sent toward them that they could not dodge or outrun due to their large, slow ships. after a long battle the Spanish fleet was already weakened. But after all, they were met by a bad storm which was common in the English Channel so the English knew how to escape to safety but the Spanish were not experienced in the English Channel and had to weather the storm. the storm was responsible for up to 42 ships sinking.
