  • Jocasta, King Oedipus' wife and Creon's sister arrives..
  • I'll go then, finding you ignorant, but just in their eyes.
  • Sister, this husband of yours, judges terrible things about me!
  • Go then, since I must either die or be driven by force from this land, dishonored.
  • Chorus, behind the scene, convincing King Oedipus to free the good man Creon.
  • Gentlemen, what is happening here?
  • Now, now free yourself from these things, I shall tell you a quick tale. A prophecy came to Laius, that death would come to him from his child, news broke that some foreign brigands slew him where the three wagon-roads meet. Yet 3 days had not past from the birth of my child, when a man binds his ankles together and sent another man into the wild of the mountains. And so Apollo brought about neither that he slay his father nor that Laius suffer the terrible things he feared from his child.
  • By the Gods, tell me, what is it that troubles you my lord?
  • Hearing you just now, my lady, how my soul wanders, HOW MY MIND SHAKES ME!
  • He said, I was the murderer of Laius...
  • Please NO. By the Gods do not go after this!!
  • Oedipus decided to meet with the Shepherd, ignoring Jocasta's pleas.
  • Messenger enters the scene, after telling Oedipus his father Polybus died by disease...
  • Had you purchased me or found me by chance?
  • Polybus, is nothing to you by birth sire. He took you as a gift from my own arms.
  • Another Shepherd gave you to me, I believe he was called one of the Laius' people
  • Meeting with the Shepherd.
  • Because she gave it to you?
  • To what end?
  • Did you give him the child he mentions?
  • I did, it came from the house of Laius, but your wife can explain it best.
  • So that I would kill it.
  • Yes, my Lord.
  • How miserable is my life? Where does my pain take me?! It is better not to see, for why must I? I for whom no sight is sweet and will lead me into exile!
  • When King Oedipus came back to the palace, her wife hanged herself, resulting in Oedipus' tragic chaos inside and eventually blinded himself.
  • Oedipus being ashamed of the citizens' reaction, went inside the palace instead with his daughters.
  • People of our country Thebes, behold this Oedipus, who knew the famous riddle and was a powerful man, now has deep dire of misfortune that has taken him! Therefore we will wait until he has reached the limit of life and suffered nothing grievous. Made by the almighty decision of Creon, Oedipus will be driven out of the City!
