Storyboard Text

  • Hello! My name is Duyen Van Le. I was born in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) Vietnam on the 3rd of January 1968.
  • I am the second youngest child out of six children. This was the time of the fierce battle in the Vietnam war called the Tet Offensive.
  • At the end of the war I was eight years old and I remember South Vietnamese soldiers throwing their uniforms on the ground with their guns as the North Vietnamese came into the city because they won the war. The sky was filled with U.S. helicopters; it was like a swarm of bees
  • After the war life was very hard especially for families who did not support the north Vietnamese which were the communists. Sometimes my family had one egg for eight people to share a little bit of rice and veggies eating only 2 meals a day instead of 3 a day.
  • When I was seventeen I went to technical collage. I was studying mechanical engineering. I went from an all A student with great marks to failing because I disagreed with my politics professor.
  • At the age of 21 i decided to escape Vietnam for a better life. I escaped by boat with 90 other people on board the original was 180 people on board but one bus broke down so only 90 people including me got on the boat was only 2.5 meters wide and 14 meters long. after 5 hours out at sea an enormous storm hit, nearly sinking the boat so we turned back to the Vietnam coast. we were lucky only 90 people on board if the bus didn't break down me and 180 people would most likely be dead.
