  • In 1833, Stephen F. Austin was selected to present the resolutions of the Convention, which were the decisions made by the Texans, to the Mexican officials. However, he had to wait for four months before he was able to meet the new president, Santa Anna, and during this period, his impatience grew. Austin wrote a letter back home suggesting that Texas should become a separate state from Coahuila, but still part of Mexico. When he finally met with Santa Anna, the president agreed with everything except the statehood. This made Austin unhappy. His letters were intercepted and viewed as an act of treason, leading to his arrest and imprisonment for a year in Mexico City. He had to stay there for another year. The people of Texas were enraged by Austin's arrest, which was the final push that led to the Texas Revolution.
