Numitorwas king until his brother,Amulius took the throne from him. Amelius had forced Nimitor's daughter Rhia Silvia to become a vestal virgin so that shewould not have any children who might try to take back thethrone.
Rhea Silvia became pregnant with the help of the God of Mars. When the 2 twin boys Romulus and Remus were born, Amulius seized them, put theminto a basket and threw them into the river Tiber. Hehoped that they would drown. However, the boys wererescued by a she-wolf who fed the babies with her own milkand cared for them.
As the two young men grew, they discovered who they really were anddecided to kill Amulius and put their grandfather backon the throne. After doing this they decided to build acity of their own but could not agree on where to build it.Remus favoured the Aventine Hill but Romulus wantedto use the Palatine Hill. They could not reach anagreement and so each began to build his own cityenclosed with walls. One day, Remus visited Romulus and made fun of hiswall by jumping over it and saying how easily it could bereached. Romulus was so annoyed that he killed Remus.
