- Nnaemeka delays telling his father about his relationship with Nene because of his fear of disappointing his father. His father has arranged a marriage for him, and Nnaemeka worries how his father will react when he refuses the wife his father has chosen for him. The text states, "'A letter will bring it upon him with a shock'" (1). He anticipates that telling his father when he sees him would have a greater outcome.
- Upon seeing his father, Nnaemeka is nervous in telling him the news of his relationship with Nene. He begins by asking for his father's forgiveness and hopes to reason with him about the arranged marriage. However, his father is adamant and refuses to accept Nnaemeka's feelings. The text states, "Nnaemeka...was very deeply affected by his father’s grief" (3). This dispute damages their relationship.
- After sending his father his wedding picture, his father sends it back mutilated, along with a letter that reads "It amazes me that you could be so unfeeling as to send me your wedding picture" (4). By sending his wedding picture, Nnaemeka hoped to reconnect with his father and change his mind about Nene, but was let down by his father's callous response.
