Elizabeth Allen Feels Lonely
Elizabeth Allen sees more severely injured patients
Allen was initially assigned to work in the 3rd Field Hospital by the cheif nurse. However, she wanted to work frontline. Allen requested to be assigned to the remote 12th Evac Hospital at Cu Chi. There Allen was faced with patients that had severe injures.
Elizabeth Goes Back Home
Allen did not feel welcomed. She reported often having a sense of loneliness. There was not much room for socializing between the ranks. In addition to this lonlieness, many of the other black people were enlisted.
Elizabeth Teaches
Later, Allen was assigned to the 71st Evac Hospital in Pleiku, Vietnam. At this time there was a surge in injured patients. It was here when the reality seemed to kick in even more. Allen talked about how this time could break down even the strongest of people.
Elizabeth becomes a professor and director
In April 1968, Allen went back to the United States. Women were required to go back home after a year and so she did.
Allen reported that the Army wanted her to teach instead. But she did not want to. So, she eventually left the military since she knew she would only be teaching.Allen did teach, however.
She moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1976. Here she served as a director and associate professor at the University of Michigan. She was the director for 6 years and taught until 2007.
