- Metaphor:  (Page 27, 12-15)"But the under surfaces of the huge masses of agitated vapor, as well as all terrestrial objects immediately around us, were glowing in the unnatural light of a faintly luminous and distinctly visible gaseous exhalation which hung about and enshrouded the mansion." 
- This is foreshadowing that he will soon die. (page 18, 11-12)I found him a bounden slave. “I shall perish:” said he, “I must perish in this deplorable folly.

- Personification: (Page 14, 34-36)"But with a shudder even more thrilling than before—upon the remodeled and inverted images of the gray sedge, and the ghastly tree-stems, and the vacant and eyelike windows."

-   Symbolism:The ghastly images inside the house symbolize the madness of the house's inhabitants. The Gothic literature and stories of strange goings-on represent the inhabitants' thoughts.
