  • Hey there Eddie!
  • Hmm...does having the cow pox prevent catching small pox?
  • Hold still boy this wont hurt a bit! You might never get small pox with this!
  • Oh my I hope this works!
  • Thanks for the help Sarah!
  • No problem! Might as well make use of these blisters
  • In the late 18th century...There was a brilliant scientist by the name of Edward Jenner. He wanted to conquer the deadly smallpox virus! One beautiful day, he noticed something that sparked his curiosity, a milkmaid named Sarah had contracted cow pox.
  • While making observations, Jenner thought that maybe the puss from the dairymaids blisters was what was protecting her from the small pox. As it was commonly known that milkmaids had an immunity to the smallpox virus.
  • In true scientific fashion, Jenner put his hypothesis to work by inoculating a young 8 year-old boy named James Phipps.
  • Thank you Dr.Jenner for identifying the source of the infection as well as helping us achieve immunity to it!
  • The inoculation was derived from the puss in the blisters that Jenner had scraped from the milkmaid's hands.
  • That same day, Phipps had a mild-fever and felt very tired. However he did not have any of the severe symptoms that normally come along with the infection.Jenner was very intrigued.

  • Jenner then injected Phipps with the small pox virus and there were no symptoms at all. He repeated this process once again
  • Because of these pioneering efforts, the idea of a vaccination was finally accepted. In 1840, the use of small pox to help develop immunity was banned by the British Government. From then on, a vaccination using cowpox was used and small pox was essentially eradicated!
  • Vaccine for smallpox has been achieved!
  • This is why it's important for you to get your yearly vaccination kids! Even with Covid-19, we are eagerly awaiting a VACCINE to save millions of lives across the world!
