  • Can you help us?
  • Sure!
  • Lets start off with what absolute value is. Absolute value is how far a positive number or a negative number is away from zero. For example, the absolute value of -6 is 6 and the absolute value of 86 is 86. Absolute value is always positive.
  • What is the absolute value of zero?
  • Well, zero is neither positive nor negative, it is neutral so the absolute value of zero is zero.
  • Oh, I get it.
  • Now I will teach you about opposites. The opposite of a number is the number that has the same absolute value as another number. For example, the opposite of 9 is -9. The opposite of -6 is 6. Like I said zero is neutral so zero's opposite is zero.
  • Next I will tell you how to add and subtract positive and negative numbers. When adding or subtracting a positive and a negative you have to add or subtract like you normally would. But if the signs are the same the answer is positive. If the signs are different, it is negative. For example, -4 - (-2) = 23 + (-5) = -8
  • Now I will tell you how to multiply and divide positive and negative numbers. If the numbers are both positive or negative the answer will be positive. If there is one positive and one negative number the answer is going to be negative. This goes with dividing too. Then you just multiply or divide like you normally would. For example, 4 x (-4) =(-16) and 48/-8 = (-6)
