- Holden Caulfield is the 17 year old narrator who talks about his experience of being kicked out of his preschool and he is struggling to find his place in the world. Holden proves to be fairly sarcastic too. He is also deeply troubled and struggles with feelings of isolation. Throughout the novel, Holden shares his thoughts and feelings on a variety of topics, from lies to love and death. He dislikes most people he meets because he considers them dishonest or fake. Holden's background is somewhat privileged, coming from a wealthy New York family, but he is also deeply affected by the loss of his younger brother Allie.
- Ward Stradlater is Holden Caulfield's roommate at Pencey Prep School. Stradlater is portrayed as a popular and athletic guy who is also quite charming and handsome. He is confident and self-assured, and Holden often views him as shallow and superficial. Stradlater's background is not explored in depth, but he is implied to come from a similar privileged background to Holden. Stradlater's personality is one of casual arrogance, and he has a tendency to be dismissive of others' feelings. Stradlater's relationship with Holden is strained, and their interactions are often marked by tension and conflict. Despite their differences, Holden and Stradlater do have a fairly complicated friendship, with Holden struggling to reconcile his dislike for Stradlater with his sense of loyalty towards him.
