  • Stage 5National Assembly Governs France 1789
  • King Louis XVI flees, but gets caught 1791
  • King Louis you traitor! You can't get away.

  • King Louis you are to be put to death.
  • By the summer of 1789, the National Assembly was controlling the government of France. In the beginning of August it ended feudalism. They passed laws that not everyone agreed with.
  • Marie Antoinette Death (beheaded)1793
  • Marie you have committed treason and shall be put to death.
  • In 1791, King Louis XVI secretly left Paris. He tried to flee the country to join his brother and other nobles. His carriage was stopped near the German Boarder, and the King was returned to Paris. The assembly and its supporters now considered the king a traitor.

  • King Louis XVI was tried and convicted of treason, or attempting to overthrow the government. The Assembly voted that the king be put to death. He was beheaded the next day in front of a large crowed.

  • Marie Antoinette was tried and convicted for treason along with her husband. She was beheaded in 1793
  • Maximilien Robespierre was a rival to Georges Danton who was the most popular leader of the revolution. Robespierre was calling for strong action. He was convinced that to get control, any action was justifiable. He wanted to get rid of anyone who disagreed with the revolutionary government. For 12 months Robespierre decided who was an enemy of the country. Anyone he accused was usually beheaded. Hundreds died each week. After a while no one was safe- not even leaders of the revolutionary government.
  • By July 1794, the other leaders of the revolution turned against Robespierre. He tried to shoot himself. Robespierre was carried, bloody and screaming to the guillotine. The terror was over.
