- Maverick's father dies in Afghanistan, there was a bombing in there shelter he was standing guard. He ran in and out saving people he saved 6 people before he ran in again and died. He died a hero and was given a medal to go to his family in his honor.

- Maverick's mom starts drinking and smoking plus she has started dating but she is dating bad guys who were criminals, like Johnny who was calling her names then she told him to stop so he punched her, and then just left.

- Middle school started, and on his first day a bully ticks him into punching his locker and getting bloody knuckle. Also the same bully was picking on a kid smaller than him so he tried to stop them by ramming into him. While doing so he smashed the little kid into the locker, then they all got sent to the principles office.

- Maverick see's the boy who betrayed him "Nate" being bullied and he went over to help him, he stopped him from getting punched, but he got in trouble because they thought he was in the fight.
- Maverick then agrees with the bully to meet him at the park so they could fight, whilst doing so Maverick wears his fathers Sheriff's badge and the metal part where it clips onto you shirt went though his skin. Maverick was rushed to the hospital and had to get surgery to get the metal removed, plus his face was all swollen and bruised. Plus his arm was broken.
- Once maverick got back from the hospital his mom promised she would stop dating and drinking and she would try and keep a job. The next day while Maverick was at school he was told that his apartment was burnt down and that his mother dropped a cigar in his hamsters cage that lit the wood chips and started a fire. So not only did his house get burnt down but his best friend and the only thing he owned was dead.
