- Hermia's Hopeless Predicament
- Hello Theseus. I have a complaint to make. My daughter has been bewitched and won't marry the man I want! Allow use of the Ancient Right of Athens. She will listen to me, or be put to death.
- Our wedding day is taking forever to arrive!
- Well hello Egeus. What seems to be the problem?
- How dare she disobey me, I own her!
- If you disobey your father, you will either be put to death, or become a nun. Demetrius is the best option, if you marry him, you will become like a picked rose distilled into perfume.
- Lysander is just as good as Demetrius. Besides, what's the worst that could happen if I disobey my father by refusing to marry Demetrius?
- Give it up Hermia, just marry me! Lysander, free Hermia from this claim of yours. Give me what is mine!
- Demetrius and Egeus, let's talk in private. Hermia, you have until my wedding day to decide.
- What should we do? Should Lysander and I run away and elope?
- You have Egeus' love, why don't you marry him instead? Egeus, I am just as worthy as Demetrius. Besides, Demetrius has seduced and stolen the heart of Helena!
- Theseus and Hippolyta express their eagerness for their upcoming wedding. Egeus abruptly interrupts them. Egeus exclaims his daughter, Hermia, has been seduced by Lysander and is disobeying him by not marrying, Demetrius, the man he wants. He asks Theseus for permission to enact the Old Athenian Law, which stipulates that Hermia must marry Demetrius or face death.
- Theseus, Egeus, Demetrius, Hermia, and Lysander discuss the state of their situation. Hermia insists that Lysander is just as fine a man and how she desires to marry him. Instead of the original two options of dying or marrying Demetrius, who she doesn't love, Theseus suggests that Hermia give it up to society, and become a nun.
- Hermia is distraught over the outcome of her desperate dilemma. Lysander and Demetrius bicker over Hermia. Lysander reveals that Demetrius has seduced Nedar's daughter, Helena. Theseus requests to discuss matters of concern with Egeus and Demetrius in private and they leave.
