  • Leo's Assignment
  • Leo is in 5th grade and has always struggled with reading and writing due to dyslexia. In social studies class, he is to create a newspaper page to show what he has learned about the Industrial Revolution. His teacher, Mr. Frank, who is new, notices his body language as the other students begin working on their assignments.

  • The meeting
  • Mr. Frank meets individually with Leo after class in his office. He wants to make sure Leo uses the strengths his dyslexia comes with to succeed. He has a few strategies in mind from "The Dyslexic Advantage" that he thinks will benefit Leo. He encourages Leo to use his N-mind strength: narrative reasoning, to imagine the Industrial Revolution as a story. Leo pictures himself back in time, working at a factory instead of going to school. He also thinks Leo has material reasoning (M strength) which could be useful in designing a nice visual layout for the newspaper page.

  • Later that night...
  • After school, Leo got right to work on his newspaper project. He decided where each headline, article, and picture would go. Mr. Frank also told Leo that he could have more time to finish his assignment, and provided Leo some handouts with large, easy-to-read print. When Leo went to bed, he was very proud of the progress he'd made that day.

  • The presentation
  • Leo was excited to present his newspaper to the class the following week. He felt a sense of pride when he learned of the strengths he didn't know he had before. He confidently showed off his nicely designed newspaper and earned an A!
