In Vienna, Marjane experiences her second revolution at the age of fourteen: adolescence, freedom, the dizzying thrills of love, but also exile, solitude, and difference. After four years of absence, Marjane returns to Tehran; the year is 1988. The war against Iraq is over, but the country is in ruins and the regime is still repressive. Marjane, initially more than happy to be back with her family, her country, and her childhood bedroom, quickly discovers that she is as much a Westerner in Iran as she is an Iranian in Europe. She decides to apply her grandmother's advice to the letter: be yourself. She enters university where she begins art studies and falls in love with Reza, whom she quickly marries—less out of deep love than because life is impossible for a young unmarried couple in Iran—and ends up divorcing just as quickly. She and her friends at the university created a bubble of oxygen with drawn curtains, a space of freedom, life, and identity. However, this fragment was not enough for her, and on the advice of her parents, she left Iran for good for France, where she has lived since 1994.
