- The Geographic factors greatly influenced the development of civilizations in Mesoamerica.It stretches from Southern Mexico into part of Central America.The region's climate and fertile land helped the civilizations thrive.
- Maya
- The Olmec civilization was one of the region's earliest civilizations and influenced later cultures.The culture began along Mexico's Gulf Coast around 1200 b.c. They are known for the stone heads they carved that represented Olmec rulers.
- Aztec
- Around 500 b.c the center of power shifted when the Zapotec built a city,Monte Albán high atop a mountain.Which helped them defend themselves against enemies.Monte Albán became the center of the Zapotec civilization.They built tombs where they buried bodies of wealthy people wearing gold jewelry.Around A.D 750 Monte Albán's power weaken.By 900 the city disappeared,Economic difficulties may have caused the decline.
- Cortez
- Maya society was structured according to a class system,and religion shaped daily life.Class determined where people lived and how they dressed.The Maya emerged around the same time as the Zapotec.Wealthier villages with religious ceremonial centers arose around 500 b.c.these villages grew into cities later in time.
- Aztec lasted 200 years but it founded thriving cities,developed rich cultures,and had built a strong military.It came to an end when the Spanish had arrived in the early 1500s.
- Cortes mounted an offensive against Tenochtitlan.Using gun,cannons,and horses.Defeating Cuauhtemoc.The conquest ended in 1521.The Spanish destroyed the great city.The ruins,were rebuilt and part of present Mexico city.
