My mom's boss offered me a position as the receptionist at her nail salon over the summer. She wanted to help me get more comfortable talking with others and also needed an extra helping hand around the shop. My first day working at the nail salon was the most nerve-racking experiences of my life. I was unprepared! I didn't know how to work the computer, the phoneline, the cash register, and I didn't know how nails worked, I was starting to doubt this whole job.
My manger was busy and I did not want to disturb any of my coworkers working. So when the phone started ringing, I at first ignored it, hoping that who ever called, dialed the wrong number, but after a couple more rings I reluctantly picked up. I wasn't sure on what to do or say. I remember my throat feeling tight when I heard the lady on the other line speak, there, I knew that my first day of work wasn't going to be a good one and maybe this whole working idea wasn't for me.
On my second day, I came early in the morning to ask my manager questions, such as how to work all these digital devices, what to do in different scenarios and about nails. Although it took a lot of practice I eventually learned how to use the computer, schedule appointments digitally, and work the cash register. I even offered to learn more things such as cleaning, nail brands, polishes, and waxing to better understand while also, be more helpful to my coworkers and the costumers.
I even learned how to properly greet people over the phone and I started getting more confidence. I would help answer questions about the shop and schedule or reschedule appointments. However when I learned more, I was also expected to handle more as well! Some days I would have to answer phone calls back to back, while also assisting customers at the desk, it was extremely stressful and even some days I would eat lunch very late.
Throughout the two months I was working, everyone in the shop were extremely understanding and kind. They truly made my whole experience of working and socializing with others less scary! Although, I had plenty amounts of bad days at work, where I made many mistakes, some big and some small, and even encountered many unhappy customers, I am fortunate to have experienced all them!
Today I am proud to say that I got an official permeant job over the summer. Although, it would still take some more practice and time for me to get used to socializing with others, I have came a long way from where I started! I now answer phone calls with strangers and socialize with others ease now! I look forward to working again in May and be exposed to more situations.
