The Start of the unknown Forest JourneyBY: Molly Pricepd-2Chapters 8-9
Anthem By: Equality- 72521
Equality 7-2521 wakes up in the uncharted forest after running away, and for the first time in his life, he is waking up by choice and realizes he does not have to follow any more rules. He realizes he can stay asleep as long as he wants and he laughs for no other reason except the fact that he is free.
We thought suddenly that we could lie thus as long as we wished, and we laughed aloud t that thought. We could also rise, or run, or leap, or fall down again. We were thinking that these were thoughts without sense, but before we knew it our body had risen in one leap (78).
Anthem by -Equality 7-2521
Equality 7-2521 takes his lightbulb through the forest, unknown of what he might uncover. He makes his first comparison from the forest to the sea. As the forest is dense he compares the forest to the sea, and he sees the bushes as waves.
We went on, cutting through the branches, and it was as if we were swimming through a sea of leaves, with the bushes as waves rising and falling.... We went on, without thought,, without care, with nothing to feel save the song of our body(79).
Equality 7-2521 comes to a stop at a stream where he takes a drink of water. After questioning earlier in the book about his looks he sees his own reflection in the stream. This surprises him as he thinks of himself as more attractive than his brothers. This is an attribute to his ego, which belives that he can trust himself now and has nothing to fear.
For, upon the blue of the sky below us, we saw our own face for the first time... For our face and our body were beautiful. Our faces were not like the faces of our brothers... And we thought that we could trust this being who looked upon us from the stream, and that we had nothing to fear with this being(80).
As Equality 7-2521 walked through the forest he heard footsteps behind him and found out that the Golden One has followed him into the forest. The Golden One claims she has followed him because their was talk all over the city.
It was on our second day in the forest that we heard steps behind us. We hid in the bushes, and we waited. The steps came closer, And then we saw the fold of a white tunic among the trees, and a gleam of gold(81).
The Golden one claims she wants to follow him wherever he goes and that he is more beautiful than his brothers, but she does not want him to send her away. Equality 7-2521 then proceeds to lift and kiss her, and tells her that there is nothing to fear as they continue their journey together.
We have followed you, and we shall follow you wherever you go. If danger threatens you, we shall face it also. If it be death, we shall die with you. You are dammed, and we wish to share your damnation(82).
Fear nothing of the forest. There is no danger in solitude...Give us your hand... It is our own world, Golden One, a strange unknown world, but our own(84).
And we felt torn, torn for some world we could not find(87).
Equality 7-2521 starts to see the wrong in the way he has been taught and starts to questions the things he has been taught to believe. As equality is reaching this epiphany the Golden One tries to tell Equality 7-2521 that she loves him, but since she does not know how to say the word I, she says We love you but is not satisfied with this phrasing. Leaving Both the Golden One and Equality 7-2521 very conflicted and confused.
We love you... No that is not what we wished to say Their words were halthing, like the words of a child learning o speak for the first time. We are one ... alone... and only... and we... love you who are one... alone... and only(86-87).
