- Douglas was sent to live with Mr Covey as a field hand.
- Mr Covey yells at Douglas
- What's the matter's he matter Douglas? Get up!!
- Mr Covey kept a close watch over his field hand. He made the work in the fields from sun up to sundown.
- Douglas fighting Mr Covey
- While Douglas was working with Eli and Mr Smith fanning wheat, Douglas "was seized with a violent aching of the head, attended with extreme dizziness" and as he stood up, he fell to the ground.
- Mr Covey and Douglas understand each other
- I will not get a hold of you again!
- "you need not, for you will come of worse than you did before."
- Mr Covey asked Douglas to get up but Douglas couldn't get up. Mr Covey gave him a "savage kick" in the side.
- After talking with Mr Auld, Douglas was sent back to Mr Covey. Mr Covey wanted to punish Douglas but Douglas fought back and overpowered him.
- Mr Covey decided to leave Douglas alone and leave him to work the fields.
