Storyboard Text

  • Foreshadowing
  • "I must perish in this bounden slave"
  • Personification
  • "...vacant-eye windows.."
  • Simile
  • ".. there was a long tumultuous shouting sound like the voice of a thousand waters.."
  • In paragraph 9, they stated "I must perish in this bounden slave" foreshadows that Roderick will die. Poe also foreshadows Madeline's death because she has a cataleptical disease that makes her sleep for long periods. This is an example because they can't really tell if she dead or just sleeping.
  • Allusion
  • "...an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart. ”
  • In the first paragraph of the story, the narrator describes the house as having “vacant eye-like windows”. He uses this description twice: first to show that the house has seen everything that has led to the fall of Usher, and again to emphasize the unidentified deception of the house.
  • Pathetic Fallacy
  • “The cloud hung oppressively low…”
  • In the second paragraph, they stated ".. there was a long tumultuous shouting sound like the voice of a thousand waters.." This illustrates hoe the ghastly images inside the house symbolize the madness of the house's inhabitants.
  • Alliteration
  • As stated in paragraph 10, "...an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart. ”To some extent one might say that the natural world is directly connected to the narrator’s interior feelings. It seems like the weather, as well as the overwhelming gloomy atmosphere of the scene, mirrors the narrator’s depressed emotions.
  • When the narrator first arrives in the first paragraph at the House of Usher, the weather is overcast - “The cloud hung oppressively low…” contributing to the menacing dark atmosphere and the sinister tone.
  • In the first paragraph, "During the whole of a dull; dark, and soundless; day in the autumn of the year (…)” . It is worth mentioning the alliteration in /d/ which clearly contributes to enhancing the gloomy atmosphere of the scene.
  • "During the whole of a dull; dark, and soundless; day in the autumn of the year (…)”
