- around 1827Frederick Douglass's mistress was the first person to teach him, and other slaves how to read.However,later on her husband found out she was teaching them how to read and he made herstop,This wasbecause they were afraid that slaves wouldn't listen to them anymore if they knew too much
- I will stop teaching you how to read and write from now on!!!!
- When Douglass's mistress stopped teaching him he'd go to the poor whites kids neighbord to learn.Everytime he went he'd have some food with him because the kids are poor and hungry .In his books he always wanted to thank the two kids that helped him the most but he was scared it could've caused them harm because slaved weren't allowed to be taught

- Later on in his life, after he ran away and escaped slavery he wrote an autobiography about his life as a slave.He also gave many speeches on why slaves should bee free should have rights to learn,e.t.c.Later in 1846 his freedom was bought over and was finally a free man
