- The heat is transferred from the bottom of the pan to the handle, if the handle were rubber (thermal insulator), the heat would not be transferred and it wouldn't be very hot.
- The heat is transferred through space into the hand using electromagnetic radiation.

- Tommy got hungry, so for lunch he got rice and put it in the microwave to heat it up before he ate it.
- Tommy ate the rice and it was delicious, but he wondered how the microwave heated it up. The microwave uses radiation to heat up the food that you put into it. Radiation is the transfer of heat through space by electromagnetic radiation, this does not rely on contact between anything. The microwave uses this in order to heat up the food.
- All of these are examples of heat transfer, the movement of heat or energy from one location to another.
