  • Chapter Five
  • Glass
  • Water
  • Earth
  • Stones
  • Coal
  • Chapter Six
  • Chapter Eighteen
  • (This is after Tris's simulation)
  • "'I want to go home,'" (Page 237)
  • The main event in Chapter Five is the choosing ceremony, and this particular occasion is vital to the book. For one thing, Tris chooses Dauntless as her faction. This establishes her role in society and essentially makes the whole plot. The ceremony dictated the life she would lead, therefore it also dictated the course of the story. Caleb chose his way of life at the choosing ceremony as well. This was exceptionally important as well because it established the relationship  Caleb would have with his family now, including Tris.
  • Chapter 25
  • One of the first Dauntless initiation tests is jumping off a building into a hole that leads to the Dauntless headquarters. The significance of this event to the story is that Tris was the first jumper. This means that she is now somebody that people are watching because of her bravery, so it hints that others may feel jealous or threatened. Tris being the first jumper is not only important as it dictates her standings in Dauntless, but it also gives Tobias, her future boyfriend, the first impression of Tris. Had she not been the first jumper, maybe Tobias wouldn't have paid as much attention to Tris, and the whole plot could have changed.
  • Chapter 28
  • "She is sniffing around for the Divergent," (Page 358)
  • The first thing that happens in this chapter is that Tris enters her second round of initiation - simulations. Tris does her simulation and escapes in 3 minutes, which is a great time. The reason this scene is important is partly that it shakes Tris so much that Tobias has to walk her back to her dorm, and she says she wants to go home. Tobias convinced her to stay and they start bonding, therefore furthering their relationship.  Another reason this is very important to the story is that it establishes a suspicion in Tobias's mind that maybe Tris is Divergent. It is vital that Tobias later finds out about Tris's Divergence because he is able to help her come to terms with it and make huge decisions, and this scene first helps to make it possible.
  • Chapter 33-End of Book (Pg. 487)
  • In Chapter 25, Tris and Four (Tobias) enter his fear landscape together. This is especially important to the plot for a multitude of reasons. For one, Tris learns about his past and his abusive father and tries to defend Tobias from him in his fear landscape. This knowledge bonds them, and it also gives the reader information needed when Tobias's father reenters the plot later. Another reason it is truly vital to the story is that it develops Tobias's character even more. In the simulation, Tobias only has four fears (hence the nickname), and this furthers the belief that Tobias wields great bravery, therefore adding to his character. Had this event not occurred, it would be more confusing when Tobias's father returns, confusing for the reader to not know Tobias's nickname origin, and the relationship between Tris and Tobias would be less developed.
  • In this chapter, Tris goes to the erudite compound and ends up meeting Jeanine, the leader of the Erudite. This event is very important to the storyline because it establishes Jeanine as an antagonist and introduces her as a character in the story. Jeanine becomes is a longtime antagonist for Tris, so it is vital that she is presented as that early on in the Divergent series, and this meeting helps to do this. Also, Jeanine expresses some doubt in Tris's being Dauntless and hints that she believes Tris may be Divergent. Showing that Tris is not hiding her Divergence well enough foreshadows future complications.
  • In this chapter, the Erudite put all Dauntless under simulation so that they can kill all abnegation with the Dauntless while the Dauntless are asleep. However, the Divergent are immune and remain awake. This scene is undoubtedly one of the most important in the book. Many events of great significance happen throughout the scene. For one, Will is killed by Tris during this situation, and this later racks her with guilt. It also builds cracks in her relationships with others while Tris keeps it a secret, thus adding to the plot. Another highly significant event is when Tris's mom sacrifices herself for Tris. Her doing this gives Tris the strength to keep fighting later on. Combined with losing her father later in the simulation, it stresses how alone Tris is and amplifies her depression that is to come in later books.
