  • One major theme of The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street by Rod Serling is Fear and suspicion causes destruction. "Man One: He got the car started somehow. He got the car started! Woman One: How come his car just up and started like that? (Page 673)". In this quote everyone was scared because Mr. Goodman's car just started by itself and he was nowhere near it. Because of that everyone was suspicious of Les Goodman because it was his car and then they try to confront him and then they became a mob. This shows that Fear and suspicion causes destruction. "Tommy: It's the monster. It's the monster. Charlie: No more talk, Steve. You're going to talk us into a grave! You'd let whatever's out there walk right over us, wouldn't yuh? Well, some of us won't. Steve: its Pete Van horn. Woman One: You killed him Charlie. You shot him dead. (Page 678-679)" This quote shows that everyone was scared because Tommy said "Its the monster". Charlie and everyone was scared so he shot the dark figure and to find out that the figure was Pete Van Horn. This also shows that Fear and suspicion causes destruction. "Woman One: Carlie... Charlie... the lights just went on your house. Why did the lights just go on. Charlie: Look. look I swear to you... it isn't me... but I do know who it is … I swear to you, I do know who it is. I know who the monster is here. I know who it is that doesn't belong. I swear to you I know (Page 680-681)". In this quote Charlie was scared because everyone was suspicious of him because he killed Pete Van Horn and his lights went on in his house. This shows that Fear and suspicion causes destruction.
