- Bernardo and Francisco see a ghost. They tell Horatio and Marcellus who don't believe until they see it for themselves. The ghost appears and they try to speak to it but it disappears.
- Party and Conflict
- King Claudius (Hamlets uncle) gets married to the queen and Hamlet is sad about it because he is still grieving over his fathers death and his mother is marrying so soon after only one month to his uncle.
- The Truth Revealed
- Laertes warns Ophelia about Hamlets love and after he heads out to France, Ophelias father tells her the same that he will tell her what she wants to hear to get what he wants and that she will ruin their reputation. He then tells her she can't talk to him.
- Swear on the Sword
- As the king and queen party and get drunk celebrating their marriage, Hamlet, Horatio, and Marcellus see the ghost. The ghost beckons Hamlet to follow. Hamlet leaves to follow the ghost.
- Hamlet talks to the ghost and finds out his father died because his uncle murdered him and tells him to seek revenge on his uncle but to leave his mother alone.
- Hamlet tells Horatio and Marcellus and reveals he's going to act strangely at times. He has them swear on his sword that they won't speak of anything or give any gestures/ hints that'll give him away.
