  • Hi Peter, How linguistically diverse is the country where you live?
  • Hi Eva, well in Colombia the most common language is Spanish, but according to Ethnologue database there are 101 languages in Colombia, so, Colombia would be one of the most linguistically diverse nations both in the Americas, and the world !
  • Oh great ! and what is your country’s official language ? How does this reflect what is actually spoken?
  • Colombia's official language is Spanish which is spoken by the vast majority of the country's 45 million people. But , some regions of the country have their own official languages, for example in Saint Andrew and Providence Island, Creole is an official language
  • That´s interesting Peter and How is the ‘standard’ version of your country’s language decided?
  • The spanish language in Colombia corresponds to the dialectal variants of the Spanish language that are spoken natively, the term has more geographocal than linguistic relevance, since the dialects spoken in the various of regions of Colombia are quite diverse as individuals
  • There are different dialects as a result of its complex geography marked by three branches of the Andes mountain range that resulted in little access and communication between the different regions, more than anything, it is present with the Caribbean region because they tend to speak very fast
  • Do speakers of certain dialects find it difficult to be understood? Why?
  • Great peter ! it shows that your country is wonderful and culturally diverse. See you tomorrow at de university
  • Thank you Eva, Yes It is !, Okay see you tomorrow
