- Men, women, and children were headed inside the church, where the youngest minister, Rev. Hooper was to give a sermon. He was heading to the church, wearing a black veil, where people felt afraid and perplexed by his clothing.
- When giving his sermon of the day, the people in the church are thinking that Hooper has gone insane, but are moved by his sermon. He does try to greet the people who were there that day, but intimidated by Hooper's appearance, don't want to approach him.
- All the people around Rev. Hooper were confused, angry, and curious on why he was wearing a veil but they didn't ask why he was wearing a veil.
- Elizabeth thought that Hooper was just going to wear the veil for just a while but had heard from him that he will never take it off. This lead to her making him choose to at least show his face to her one time or she leave him. Hooper had chose not to show his face to Elizabeth, and so she left.
- Later on over the years when Hooper was alone, he was eventually nearing to death. He has asked his friend to not unveil his face and just bury him with the veil. Elizabeth had come back to help the bedridden man, until he had eventually died. But before he died, he told his friend that everyone has their own black veil covering up something.
- The people noticed something different from him when he attended one of woman's funeral that he wasn't acting normal like he act before.
