How has the advent of new technology impacted child development and parenting?
Hello, my name is Esperanza Moreno and that's exactly what I will be discussing today!

Technology affects socialization by causing issues with face-to-face interactions. For instance, most children would rather communicate over text than talking face-to-face. (National University). This can cause a strain on family bonds and relationships.

Not being used to having face-to-face interactions can make getting a job, meeting someone new, and other social interactions hard.

Another problem with excessive screen time at a young age is mental health.
Adolescents who spent more time on new media (including social media and electronic devices such as smartphones) were more likely to report mental health issues, and adolescents who spent more time on non screen activities (in-person social interaction, sports/exercise, homework, print media, and attending religious services) were less likely (Sage Journals).

Along with technology affecting socialization, it also lowers their attention spans. The need for technological interactions makes waiting especially hard for children. With technology, they aren’t forced to wait and they have something to distract themselves with. Technology moves fast, there are instant responses and instant gratification that are impacting attention spans for young children and teenagers alike. In Redwood City, California, Vishal, a 17-year-old, answers the question: book or computer? He claims that on Youtube, “you can get a whole story in six minutes,” and explains that “A book takes so long. I prefer the immediate gratification” (New York Times).

It is stated by the news channel KRQE that,“Study shows kindergarteners who watch more than an hour of tv a day are fifty percent more likely to be overweight than those who don’t and seventy percent more likely to be obese” ( KRQE 1:00 - 1:12). So it’s vital that adults make sure their children are spending time outside and getting enough physical activity. By encouraging being outdoors and limiting screen time, parents can lead their children towards a healthier lifestyle.
One way to limit the amount of technology intake is to limit it while children are focused on other tasks. For example you can limit screen time while they work on schoolwork, encourage conversation and interaction during dinner time, turn the TV off when children are reading.
Since children spend so much time on technology, they don’t get outside as often as they should. As a result of this, children and adolescents may engage in more mindless eating while watching TV or playing video games.

Another way to limit screen time is to get your kid involved in sports.

Or get them involved in hobbies such as art.

Technology can be helpful for children if used appropriately. In the website published by Twin Science, ‘10 Benefits of Technology to Children’ it is stated that, “Thanks to the Internet, we can access the information we want at any time from our computers, tablets or phones. Whatever we want to learn or want to pass on to people, we can reach to the farthest point we can reach and get rid of the boundaries of time-space concepts. We’re going to him without waiting for the information to come. The benefit of our children is of great importance for their rapid learning,” (Twin Science).

In conclusion, while technology has made our lives easier in plenty of ways, it’s important to see its downsides, especially for children. Children spend less time talking face-to-face, having more trouble paying attention, and facing more mental health problems. Parents need to stay watchful, set rules, and help kids use technology in a balanced way. By encouraging outdoor social activities instead of constantly being online, parents can reduce these bad effects of technology and support healthier futures for their children.
