- Shmuel didn’t appear at the fence for nearly a week, and when he did, he had bruises everywhere. Bruno assumed that it was from a bicycle accident while Schmuck just nodded his head in fear.

- Mother became increasingly listless and frustrated with living at Out-With a year after the family arrived. When both children caught lice, Mother persuaded Father that it was time for her to return to Berlin with the children.
- Shmuel didn’t appear at the fence for nearly a week, and when he did, he had bruises everywhere. Bruno assumed that it was from a bicycle accident while Schmuck just nodded his head in fear.
- Order was sent to their house in Berlin for it to be washed and cleaned so that Bruno, Gretel, and Mother could move back in within the week. However, Bruno found that he was not looking forward to this as much as he would have expected and he dreaded having to tell Schmuel the news.
- The two boys met at their usual spot and Bruno told him the news. Schmuel suddenly came up with a plan and the next day it set into action. Bruno wore the same striped pajamas as the Jews and went under the fence to explore with Schmuel. Suddenly the soldiers took them into a march into a dark room. That was the last time anyone heard of Bruno again.
- No news of Bruno was ever heard again. Soldiers went into local towns and searched anywhere Bruno could be found but nothing was left of him except for a pile of his clothes left beside the fence. When his father decided to investigate where Bruno was for himself he realized the truth and didn't care what happened anymore.
