- When Scout follows Capulrnia into the kitchen, Calpurnia yells at Scout for being disrespectful, not treating Walter like company, and for acting so high and mighty.

- What the sam hill? Walter, why did you just drown your meal in syrup?
- Burris Ewell was asked by Miss Caroline to go home to clean bugs out of his hair and to return the next day. Burris leaves but makes it clear that he is leaving by choice and not returning for the rest of the year, making Miss Caroline cry.
- Go home and bathe yourself before you come back tomorrow.
- Burris Ewell is a real mean one!
- Ain’t no snot-nosed teacher ever born can make me do nothing! You just remember that you ain’t making me go nowhere!
- Atticus and Scout make a deal that Scout will continue to go to school and Atticus will continue to read with her every night as long as she keeps it a secret.
- I don't want to go to school anymore! I already know how to read and Miss Caroline hinders my learning!
- That's against the law, you have to go. However, we'll make a compromise. We'll continue to read every night.
