  • Many of the common witch stereotypes came from women brewing alcohol rather than posions, stews or medicine.
  • Several aspects of operating a tavern, such sweeping, growing herbs and brewing, were chores women were already expected to do.
  • Edith's broom's flying! Either, she's secretly a witch, or I'm drunker than I thought!
  • Ssometimes the female brewers had their children help to thy were divourced or widowed. She could teach them responsibilty and keep them out of trouble at the same time.
  • Unlike private residences, In public taverns, patrons could fully view the brewing process, ironically later using that very same knowledge as evidence of sorcery against the female bar owner.
  • For some reason, ale women also hung a broom over the front door to mark the location as a bar, when brooms have absolutely nothing to do with alcohol, so it's their own fault that said brooms were mistaken for flying.
  • Ale women also wore the stereotypical conical hat, when they sold ale from market stalls. Ironically, these very same hats were normally worn by noble women, so they could be spotted in a crowd. The ale women, some of whom were already born into wealthy families, began wearing the hats for the same reason.
