  • In 1862, an arms factory in ironically Abraham's own hometown produce minnie ball bullets cast from molten lead. Invented in France they were an ounce in weight and a half inch across. One person could cast 3,000 per hour.

  • Across from the White House was the Telegraph Office, where President Lincoln obsessively used Morse Code to scend direct orders to his generals. He also places all northern telegraph lines under military control.
  • At Antietam in 1862, 6,000 soldiers perished, and another 17,000 were wounded, more than four times as many as during WW2'S Normandy Invasion.
  • During the Civil War, soldiers were 5x more likely to perish than civilians. Nathan Bowditch perished during battle in Virginia. It took a week for his corpse, embalmed with arsenic and zinc chloride, to arrive home in Boston 500 miles away.
