  • The First Warning
  • No! We don't want to speak Afrikaans!!!
  • Black South African schoolchildren were instructed in 1975 that they had to start learning the new language of Afrikaans in order to begin studying their two main subjects, social studies, and mathematics. Students at Orlando West went on strike and refused to attend class on April 30, 1976. Doing so, it spread rebellion to other Soweto schools.
  • Attack of the Police
  • Stand Down!
  • As the strike ended up being a failure, the students set up a protest. Many students could no longer deal with the injustices of South Africa. Students planned a nonviolent march in protest of Apartheid laws.
  • The Chaos
  • Why are they doing this to us?
  • The police released a dog into the crowd of students. It was a warning of what they were about to do if they did not stop protesting. The students then started to throw rocks at the dog, killing it.
  • The Aftereffects
  • That's my brother, where are you taking him?
  • The protesters were startled when a police officer shot into the air as their plan of releasing a dog into the crowd of students wasn't a success. More bullets were fired by the police into the mob of children and teenagers, causing chaos.
  • Stop this protest!
  • A riot breaks out. Police officers start shooting toward the crowd, killing innocent children along the way. The doctors rejected the police's request for the hospital to produce a list of all victims with gunshot wounds so that they are prosecuted for rioting.
  • One of the most well-known incidents in the fight against apartheid, the Soweto Uprising significantly changed the socio-political landscape in South Africa. It has marked a turning point in South Africa's quest for independence. In the following year, rioting spread to other parts of South Africa.
