  • Jonas is an eleven-year-old boy who lives in a very controlled community. At the beginning of the story, he feels frightened after seeing an airplane fly over his community. The pilot made a mistake by flying over the community, which was against the rules. This shows that Jonas lives in a place where people have very little freedom.
  • Slide: 2
  • At home, Jonas and his family have a special time when they talk about their feelings. Jonas's father works with newborn babies and tells the family about a baby who is having difficulties. Jonas's mother works for the Department of Justice and explains how important it is to follow the rules. Their family life seems caring, but it is also controlled by the community.
  • Slide: 3
  • Jonas is nervous about the upcoming Ceremony of Twelve. During the ceremony, he will receive an assignment that determines what job he will have in the future. He does not know what assignment he will receive, so he is worried about what will happen. The ceremony is an important moment because it marks the beginning of his adult responsibilities.
