  • Frederick Douglass collapsed on the floor from sickness and injury. Mr. Covey finds him and orders him to get up, kicking him when he falls back down.
  • Why aren’t you working?
  • I can’t get up

  • A few days after Fredericks return, Mr. Covey attempted to tie up Frederick, but Frederick decided to fight back.

  • Frederick Douglass runs from Mr. Covey, hoping to find help at his masters home. He travels seven miles while bleeding and sick. He arrives at his masters house covered in blood and dirt. He requested to be moved to a new home, explaining that Mr Covey would kill him if he returned. His master said that Mr. Covey would not kill him and told him to return home the next morning.
  • Mr. Covey called for help twice, but the first time, Frederick kicked the man in the stomach. The second time, the other person refused to do anything, saying that they were hired out for work, not to whip Frederick. They continued to fight for two hours afterwards.

  • Frederick Douglass meets Sandy Jenkins. Sandy asked Douglass to go home with him for the night, offering help and advice. The next day Sandy gave him a root that protected him from being hurt.
  • The rest of the time he spent with Mr. Covey, he never laid a hand on Frederick in anger. He was afraid to get ahold of him again
