  • The Articles of Confederation were a badidea, and here's why.by Isabelle Patterson
  • The Articles of Confederation were created by the citizens of the early U.S. with the intention of creating a weak central government. The federal powers included: the authority to declare war, make laws, make treaties, levy taxes, create a postal system, and trade with foreign nations and the native population. Although it had the illusion of power, the federal government actually had no power to enforce them. I believe that these Articles and the idea behind them were a bad idea. I say this because they created no national laws or system of currency, no federal court system, and a few other disastrous results. Since there were no national laws or currency, each state operated as its own country with its own form of money. The laws barely existed, and there was no way for the federal government to enforce them. There was no one to settle disputes between states since there was no court system. It only allowed each state one political vote, regardless of its size or population. It also gave the nation no authority to collect taxes. The lack of structure in the federal government led to a lack of unity between states and left them isolated.
