  • Let's go! The Pony Express originally started on April 3, 1860 when a Johnny Fry set out on horseback from St. Joseph, Missouri with mail in a bag.
  • Fry travelled for many miles and then passed his bag on to another rider. This rider also rode some miles and passed the bag to another rider. This system continued until it reached California after about 10 days. This means It had traveled 2,000 miles across thewhole continent! Crazy, right?
  • This became the first ever ride of the Pony Express.

  • The Pony Express influenced westward expansion because it made it easier, faster, and more efficient to transport mail throughout the country. Older ways such as stagecoaches and boats took longer like weeks and months. With the Pony Express, mail could be delivered in just days, proving how important the Pony Express was for westward expansion.
