The first permanent British colony in America was Jamestown. King George was not strict at this time, so the colonists were not concerned about their freedom.

When the stamp act was passed, the American activists sparing into action. The taxes were to help pay for the war, however, the colonists felt the troops were only there to watch them. Therefore they didn't want to pay their taxes.
