In Freud’s writing he talks about social environments and what those who are vulnerable do. With the hope of maintaining a certain social standing within a group or a single individual, people will hide their true feelings in order to present themselves as being strong or confident. Don’t worry my son. Even if they won’t, just know I always will.

It’s okay son! Just hold on tightly and start swing your legs back and worth! You can do it!
Mom, I’m scared! What if I fall? Can you just swing me like usual?
“Raising children who are hopeful and who have the courage to be vulnerable means stepping back and letting them experience disappointment, deal with conflict, learn how to assert themselves, and have the opportunity to fail.” (Pg. 193) Here the mother is letting her son overcome his fear by putting him in a controlled vulnerable situation. By forcing him to deal with conflict, he’ll eventually overcome his fear and will be less likely to shy away from vulnerable situation in the future.
