  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Fear makes people crazy.
  • In "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is that fear makes people crazy, for example on page 674 *PDF* "Don. Maybe you better tell us. Nothing's working on this street. Nothing. No lights, no power, no radio. [And then meaningfully] Nothing except one car-yours!" From this I can infer that Don is going crazy because he thinks Les is an alien. In addition on page 679 " STEVE. [Slowly looks up] It's Pete Van Horn. DON. [In a hushed voice] Pete Van Horn! He was just gonna go over to the next block to see if the power was on-. WOMAN. You killed him, Charlie. You shot him dead!" This evidence shows that charlie went crazy because of fear and shot someone innocent because of his fears. Finally on page 681, Charlie says "Its... Its the kid. Its Tommy. He's the one!" This shows that Charlie very skeptical and crazy over something that can be sorted by staying calm. In conclusion the theme of this story is that fear makes people crazy.
