Storyboard Text

  • Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink
  • In this line of the sonnet, Edna tells how love is not everything. That it is not a basic need to live. It shows that love does not help in certain situations.
  • Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath
  • The writer, Edna, reiterates how love does not have have a certain value in certain situations. It does not help keep you alive when you need it. She tries to show that love is merely an emotion that can't help in critical situations.
  • Sonnet 30 by Edna uses irony to further her theme. Edna uses verbal irony in the sonnet by being contradictory. She states all the things love isn't and how it is not a necessity to continue life, but later says how she would not trade it for a necessity because it makes life bearable and worth everything.
  • The turn in the poem starts at line 8 when the writer states "Even as I speak, for lack of love alone." At the beginning of the sonnet Edna explains how love does not help in critical moments, but in this line she starts to question why people choose to die for the lack of love. She begins to write in first person when this turn happens. After the turn, Edna questions if she is willing to give up love and comes to the conclusion that even if she needed a basic need she would not be willing to give up love.
  • It well may be that in a difficult hour,Pinned down by pain and moaning for release
  • In the sonnet Edna tells what love is not. How it does not give the necessities in life, but after the turn she begins to question what she would give their love up. She gives situations that were mentioned earlier and asks herself if she would give love up. She makes the reader question it themselves.
  • It well may be. I do not think I would.
  • This is the last line of the sonnet. It makes the audience rethink the value of love. Because of how Edna describes how love does not give any physical help to the body, the reader might expect Edna to discredit the idea, but instead she chooses love above all else.
